Dick Clark's Diabetes Disclosure Leads
To Becoming Spokesman for AADE, American Association of
Diabetes Educators
posted 04/22/04
A
secret that Dick Clark has
kept for a decade has been revealed--he has type 2 diabetes.
The seemingly ageless former American Bandstand host was diagnosed with diabetes
in 1994, but told no one, save close family and friends.
Clark, 74, was planning to reveal his mysterious "health issue" next Tuesday
according to a press release sent to media outlets, but was outed a week early
by a New York Daily News gossip columnist.
Now that Clark's gone public with his ailment, he will act as spokesman for the
American Association of Diabetes Educators and the pharmaceutical company Merck
& Co., according to Ogilvy public relations.
Renowned as America's "oldest teenager," Clark will use his celebrity to help
launch a national public education campaign. "Diabetes: Know the Heart Part"
will inform Americans about the links between diabetes and heart attack and
stroke.
The New Year's Rockin' Eve host did not comment on his illness.
