Advocacy and Community

As a non-profit organization, we exist to fulfill a need in the community that isn’t being met. Defeat Diabetes Foundation's mission is to create awareness about diabetes, promote screening and early detection of the disease and provide information that leads to the prevention and self-management of diabetes.

But that’s a BIG job and we can’t do it alone.

Our Executive Director Andrew P. Mandell -- Mr. Diabetes® just completed a 10,030.3 mile perimeter walk of the U.S. While on his journey he met and talked with over 78,000 individuals one-on-one, thousands more in groups, met with diabetes researchers and elected officials. He learned that to tackle diabetes it needs to start on a local level by helping to create awareness about the problem and focus on programs that foster a healthier community.

Because diabetes impacts nearly one in every four people in your community (directly or indirectly) there is a myriad of tasks that you could undertake that would benefit people in your own backyard.  Although we’ll always have a few special needs that come up from time to time, we’ve identified four key areas where volunteers can make significant contributions.
